Courteous Driving

As drivers, we all share the road with each other, with bikers, and with pedestrians. A big part of being a driver is not only driving safely and being aware of your surroundings but being courteous to the other people you share the road with. To avoid the need of a personal injury lawyer, here are a few easy ways to be a courteous driver and share the road.

The most common accident is caused by following to close to others, so the first courteous driving tip is to avoid any tailgating. You should always keep a safe distance between yourself and the car in front of you. This is important for obvious reasons; if the car in front of you slams on their breaks and you slam into them, legally it is your fault. If you are on the opposite side and someone is tailgating you, avoid aggravating them and move over so he or she can pass you. If you are in a wreck that involves tailgating, personal injury lawyers can potentially help you settle these issues out-of-court, which is a huge hassle taken off your shoulders. In the end, you are responsible for keeping the safe distance.

An opportune time to be a courteous driver is when others are entering your lane or merging onto the freeway. Making room for other vehicles especially during busy hours can help make the drive safer and less stressful for yourself and others. However, if you are the driver merging or changing lanes, do your best to not impede the course of the cars you get in front of. You should try to move into their lane when there is a large enough space for you to fit. While it’s nice to have someone to make space for you, you shouldn’t force others to slow down for you to move into their lane. And of course, use your turning signal when you change lanes to alert all other vehicles in your proximity.

Some other basic tips to follow in order to be a courteous driver is always come to a complete stop at a stop sign and observing the right-of-way of other drivers on the road. Laws are made to preserve the safety of pedestrians and so they frequently have the right-of-way, however, be cautious at all times even if you have the right of way. Nonetheless, if someone violates your right-of-way and are struck as a result, you may want to consult a personal injury lawyer to avoid being accused of fault.

These are just a few of the many ways to be a courteous driver. There are a plethora of other ways to be a courteous driver and it does not take that much effort. The result is better than anything you could ask for: the safety of others. Being a courteous driver can help you prevent the risk of an accident. If you are in an accident, then consider hiring a personal injury lawyer or an attorney. Though it may seem like an optional request, courteous driving is required to keep safe and well-functioning roads for drivers, bikers, and pedestrians alike.
