Driving in Harsh Weather Conditions

Winter is just around the corner, and though you’ve probably already experienced driving in heavy rain, get ready to deal with the snow. From rainstorms to snowstorms, the fall and winter seasons bring with them the harshest weather conditions, and that increases the risk of getting into a car accident and having to call your car accident lawyer. So, how do you reduce the risks of getting into a horrible car accident in these weather conditions?

Obviously, just staying off the roads isn’t going to be the solution; you have to go to work, attend school and leave the house eventually in order to buy necessities such as food, so the key is to practice safe driving in these weather conditions. Here are some tips a car accident lawyer might give you on driving during harsh weather conditions.

Slow it Down

This is probably the most obvious tip, but one that drivers fail to recognize. During a heavy rain or snow storm, you have to slow down. The best tip is to drive at a speed that is reasonably safe for the conditions; a lot of the times, drivers will often reduce their speed by 10 MPH, but heavier snowstorms that reduce visibility require you to slow down even more.

Failure to slow down during these conditions can lead to a tragic accident, so make sure that you’re aware of the dangers that speeding during a storm can bring to you and those around you.

Give Other Drivers Some Room

Tailgating is the worst thing you can do, especially when there is a possibility of black ice or snow on the roads. If you don’t give the car in front of you enough room, you can find yourself failing to be able to break in time, and if you happen to be driving on either snow or ice, even breaking won’t be enough to prevent an accident.

If you’ve been hit by a driver who has failed to give you the proper following distance during a storm, contact a car accident lawyer at Robert J. DeBry and Associates.

Avoid Breaking During a Turn

Spinouts are an infamous accident type that happen frequently during the winter months, and the main reason is that drivers attempt to break while they’re making a turn. The reason this happens is because when you press on the breaks, the wheels stop turning, ultimately taking away any traction you had on the road. To successfully make a turn without spinning out, you should lightly feather the breaks before you begin turning the wheel. Once you start turning, let off the break and allow your vehicle to coast through the turn. This will keep you from spinning out into oncoming traffic, saving you a call to your car accident lawyer.

Control Your Skids

Skidding on black ice, snow, or while hydro planning can be terrifying, but if you stay calm, there is a good chance that you can avoid a car accident. If you find yourself in a skid, take your foot off the brake and the accelerator and turn the steering wheel in the direction that the car is skidding. Do this until the skid is canceled out and the vehicle begins to straighten out. If you find that you’re having trouble correcting the skid, find a snowbank to drive the car into for a safe stop.

Driving in harsh weather conditions is intimidating, but with the proper precautions, you can keep yourself as well as other drivers on the road safe. If you are in need of legal representation after a car accident, contact a car accident lawyer at Robert J. DeBry and Associates.
