Ridesharing has become a popular way for many to get around. This trend is even true of cities like New York, where its common to hail a regular taxi. Most of these services have developed methods to keep drivers accountable and to keep passengers safe; however, as car accident lawyers, we know that even ridesharing drivers can have careless habits. Here are some of the states from DriversEd’s Reckless Ridesharing Report:
Reckless Driving
While most rideshare services arrive at their destination safely, they can also contribute to danger on the road. Out of the passengers who DriversEd included in their report, 35% say that they had a reckless driver. That’s just over one-third of rideshare drivers.
Road Rage
Along the same lines as passengers with reckless drivers, 15% of passengers reported that their driver had road rage. Road rage is a significant contributor to unsafe driving habits and can become dangerous for both passengers and other drivers on the road.
Distracted Driving
Even ridesharing services deal with distracted drivers. In the report, 29% of passengers said they’d seen the driver texting while driving, and 8% reported that their driver was watching a video on their phone. As seasoned car accident lawyers, we’ve seen how both of these habits, though they may seem small, can have lasting consequences in the lives of individuals and families.
Impaired Driving
Even outside of road rage, reckless driving, and distractions, 12% of ridesharing passengers say that they had reason to believe their driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Our team of car accident lawyers has seen far too many tragedies come from drunk driving. If you suspect this is the case, end the ride and report the driver.
