Are Electric Vehicles Safer than Internal Combustion Cars?

Electric Vehicles are slowly becoming a more popular and permanent part of our lives. Salt Lake City, Utah, is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Therefore, you can expect to see more electric vehicles in the city very soon. The primary concern that leads most people to choose electric vehicles over internal combustion cars is the impact on the environment. However, there is another crucial issue of contention which is safety. Many people claim that electric vehicles are safer than internal combustion cars, but are they? We know that both you and our car accident lawyers want to know. Let us find out:

Motors

Internal combustion engine cars only have one motor. On the other hand, it is normal for electric vehicles to have two to four motors. Electric vehicles are safer than internal combustion cars because they have multiple motors.

Using more motors leads to torque vectoring, which simply put, is the ability of a car to distribute traction or braking forces to various engines. Therefore, if there is an issue with one motor, others can carry the load. Torque vectoring hence leads to safer vehicles.

For example, when a car turns, the car can apply equal amounts of torque to the right and left sides of the vehicle. That would make the car safer by improving its corner response.

Therefore, the chance of rolling over in an electric vehicle is minimal when compared to an internal combustion vehicle.

Maintenance

When you look under the hood of an electric vehicle, you will notice that it is a lot simpler than a car with an internal combustion engine. That simply means that there are fewer parts to cause a malfunction or car breakdown.

Electric vehicle maintenance does not involve changing things like oil, steering fluid, or spark plugs. Therefore, they are a lot easier to maintain hence less chance of human error causing issues with the car like forgetting an oil change.

The fewer the things in a car that require repair or replacement, the safer drivers are on the road. Less maintenance also means car owners have more money to repair any issue when the need arises.

Collisions

Some collisions are unavoidable, so an element of safety has to be how passengers and the driver would fare in a serious collision. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA), passengers in electric vehicles were less likely to be harmed in a collision than in a traditional car.

The conclusion was arrived at after a variety of crash tests were done by the NHTSA. The electric vehicles achieved a very high safety rating, primarily due to the external aluminum plating that usually surrounds the battery array of electric vehicles.

Flammability

Because electrical vehicles do not use fuel, they have very little chance of being flammable. That makes them much safer than internal combustion cars.

Electric cars run on lithium-ion batteries, which are, in fact, very flammable. However, it is very difficult for these batteries to combust. They will only ignite if they are exposed to poor conditions for too long.

Research shows that there is only one fire for every 100 million lithium-ion batteries.

Electric cars are safer than internal combustion engines on these four accounts. However, car safety depends on many other factors.
