As expert car accident lawyers, we see far too many tragedies come from distracted driving. We know that prevention is much easier than recovery, and we want you and your loved ones to stay safe on the road. Here are some stats to keep in mind before deciding to text, open a phone app, answer a call or eat on the go.
Car accident lawyers are not the only ones concerned with road safety. Other organizations have done research to help the roads become a safer place. Here is some of what they have discovered:
National Safety Council Stats
According to the National Safety Council (NSC), human error is responsible for 94% of motor vehicle crashes in the United States.
In 2017, a jarring 40,000 people were killed in an auto accident or other types of transportation-related incidents.
DriversEd Report
According to the Behind-the-Wheel Confessions Report, 58% of United States drivers who responded said they don’t fully stop at stop signs.
Nearly half of the drivers in the report admit to running red lights.
89% admit to driving above the speed limit
71% said they drive while drowsy.
1 in 5 United States drivers admits to falling asleep while behind the wheel.
31% of drivers admit to checking their phones
21% of drivers admit to driving while high from marijuana.
55% of drivers say they check social media while on the road.
NHTSA Findings
An NSC survey found that 7% of all drivers at any given time are on their phones while driving.
During daylight hours, 660,000 drivers are either on their phone or adjusting electronic devices while driving.
Drivers who talk on the phone, whether hand-held or hands-free, don’t see up to 50% of their surroundings, including other drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.
