Imagine spending a couple of years in prison following a wrongful murder conviction. That’s what Amanda Knox, an American activist, journalist, and author, went through. She spent nearly four years in an Italian detention center following her wrongful conviction for the 2007 Meredith Kercher murder. Meredith Kercher was Amanda’s fellow exchange student, and the two shared an apartment.

Amanda Knox Before The Crime

Amanda Knox was a linguistic student at the University of Washington when she joined University for Foreigners Perugia in Italy to spend an academic year. Amanda shared a four-bedroom apartment with Meredith Kercher, Filomena Romanelli, and Laura Mezzetti. Amanda Knox’s part-time job was working at Diya “Patrick” Lumumba’s Le Chic bar. She met Raffaele Sollecito at a concert she attended in October 2007, who later became Knox’s boyfriend. 

What Was The Crime?

From the information gathered, Knox and Sollecito allegedly spent the night together before returning to Knox’s apartment on 2nd November. They found the front door open and visible bloodstains in the bathroom. Kercher’s bedroom was also closed. 

We have established that after getting no answer from Kercher’s phone that morning, Amanda called Romanelli and explained the worrying situation. After several attempts to open Kercher’s locked bedroom door failed, police arrived at the apartment because they had traced phones to a nearby garden. 

They managed to break Kercher’s bedroom door, and there she was, her body lying on the floor. The police statement that Robert J. DeBry & Associates researched claimed that Kercher’s body was semi-naked and her throat cut. 

Knox and Sollecito Emerged as Primary Suspects

After an eleven-month trial and nearly two years in jail, an Italian jury found Sollecito and Knox guilty of Kercher’s murder in a sex game gone wrong. Sollecito was sentenced to 25 years in prison, while Knox received 26 years. 

But Then Amanda Knox was Freed

And in 2011, an appeals court overturned Knox’s most serious charges. That was due to possible cross-contamination during the collection of DNA from the supposed murder weapon.
