The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that vehicle crash fatalities are up 7% between 2019 and 2020. At Robert J. DeBry & Associates, we understand how terrifying a trucking accident can be. We have specialized truck accident lawyers with experience.

After an accident, you may be confused or disoriented; this list will help you remember what to do if it ever happens to you.

1. Call 911

Get to safety and if you’re able, then pull your truck to the side of the road, out of traffic. Even if you believe there isn’t a lot of damage or injuries, you should call 911 immediately give them as much information as you can. Answer all of the dispatchers’ questions about the accident.

2. Exchange Information and Collect Evidence

The second thing you’ll want to do is exchange insurance information with the other party involved in the accident. Then you’ll want to collect any possible evidence. Take pictures of both vehicles from multiple angles. Also, talk to anyone who witnessed the accident and write down their names and personal information if you need to speak with them again. Get a copy of the police report.

3. Get Medical Care

You will want to make sure that you go to the hospital or doctor immediately after an accident. Get all injuries checked out by the doctor. Then make sure you get a copy of the doctor’s notes and any treatment plans. You will want this information and the other evidence you collected when hiring a truck accident lawyer.

4. Report the Accident but Do Not Give a Statement

The next step is to report the accident. If you work for a company, they will provide insurance coverage for you as a driver. However, you will still have to say the accident. Be wary of any insurance adjuster you speak with; they sound friendly, but their job is to make sure their company pays out as little money as possible. Do not under any circumstances give them a recorded statement.
