On August 31, 1997, in an attempt to evade paparazzi at the Hotel Ritz Paris, Princess Diana, Dodi, and their bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones was chauffeured by Henri Paul to Dodi’s apartment in a Mercedes-Benz W140 S-Class.

However, at 00:23, Henri Paul lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the thirteenth pillar of the Pont D’Alma tunnel.

Paul and Dodi died instantly, while Diana was rushed to the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital. Trevor Rees-Jones survived the accident but suffered a severe head injury.

Diana later died of her injuries at 4:00 am

Her funeral was held on September 06, 1997, at Westminster Abbey and was televised to an estimated two billion people worldwide.

An inquest into her death was opened on September 09, 1997. On April 7, 2008, a jury decided that Diana’s killing was unlawfully by the “grossly” negligent driving of the paparazzi and the Mercedes driver Henry Paul.
