A graduate of the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law, Derek joined the ranks of DeBry & Associates in early 2019. Fret not cougar fans: Derek studied as an undergraduate at Brigham Young University too and is still mastering how to explain his allegiances whenever game day arrives.
As a first-year law student, Derek clerked for Judges Connors, Dale, and Hamilton in the Second District Court of Utah, providing counsel and support on numerous criminal and civil cases. He further enhanced his legal acumen while in law school interning with the University of Utah’s Technology and Ventures Commercialization Office where he assisted with overseeing various intellectual property matters ranging from copyright, trademark, and professorial research. He later interned for a short time with a Mergers & Acquisitions firm in California in 2016.
While attending law school, Derek received the Best Individual Orator award while participating in the Sutherland-Giles IP Moot Court in 2016 where he argued both sides of a complex patent case. He started his career in securities practice with a local investment services firm but has since fixed his attention to helping those who need help the most in personal injury practice.
When he has a spare moment, you can find Derek looking to top his personal best in pushups or trying to refrain from referencing memes no one else understands. He is an avid reader/writer, fitness and health enthusiast, and an ardent fan of new technologies.
