Provigil and Nuvigil Birth Defect Cases

Provigil and Nuvigil Birth Defect Cases

Have you taken Provigil and Nuvigil for wakefulness, narcolepsy, sleep apnea or “shift work disorder?”.

The Food and Drug Administration of the United States (FDA) has yet to take action against Provigil (modafinil) and Nuvigil (armodafinil). A number of reported cases regarding birth defects in children whose mothers had taken the medication during pregnancy have come to light.

Provigil and Nuvigil could lead to birth defects including:

Hypospadias

Cleft lip or palate (orofacial clefts)

Microcephaly

Truncus arteriosus

Pulmonary atresia

Coarctation of the aorta

Atrioventricular septal defects

D-transportation of the great arteries

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The DHPC issued a statement that encouraged the discussion of additional methods of contraception, since modafinil may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Women with the ability to have children must use effective contraception during treatment for at least two months after stopping Provigil or Nuvigil. If you or someone you know have given birth to a child with birth defects after taking Provigil or Nuvigil, contact a lawyer at Robert J. DeBry & Associates.
