Xarelto, also known as Rivaroxaban, is a prescription blood thinner that stops blood coagulation. It is usually given to patients who go through joint replacement surgery or have non-valvular atrial fibrillation. The drug is manufactured by Bayer and it was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2011.

However, in August 2013, the FDA required Bayer to change Xarelto’s warning label because of the increased risk of serious bleeding, stroke, blood clots and other side effects linked to those using Xarelto. Additionally, patients who stop taking Xarelto have a greater chance of suffering from thrombotic events like spinal/epidural hematomas, pulmonary embolisms and more.

As a widely used drug, Xarelto is probably used by somebody you know. If you know somebody who has suffered or is suffering from any of these negative conditions as a result of using Xarelto, don’t hesitate to call us today for a free evaluation of the case.

Xarelto®’s Potentially Dangerous Side Effects

  • Serious Bleeding Events: Major bleeding events could be gastrointestinal bleeding, intracranial bleeding, brain aneurisms, hemorrhagic strokes and more. There is nothing scarier than uncontrollable bleeding. These episodes usually result in extended hospitalization and sometimes death.
  • Spinal/Epidural Hematoma: When blood builds up between the dura mater—the outer membrane of the central nervous system—and the skull, a spinal/epidural hematoma occurs, causing, loss of consciousness, intense headaches and sometimes death.
  • Stroke: When there is a lack of blood flowing to the brain because of a blockage or a hemorrhage, a stroke occurs. Strokes can cause decreased motor skills, paralysis, numbness and, in some cases, death.
  • Heart Attack: When there isn’t adequate blood flowing to the heart, muscles in the heart can get injured. This is known as a heart attack and can cause chest pain, light-headedness and death.
  • Pulmonary Embolism: Occurs when a blood clot formed in the legs or pelvis travels to the lungs. A pulmonary embolism can cause difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate, low blood pressure and sudden death.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): When a blood clot forms in a deep vein—usually in the legs—this is called deep vein thrombosis. DVT complications can include swelling of the legs, leg pain and pulmonary embolism if the clot reaches the lungs.

Who Is at Risk?

A study conducted by New York Medical College in 2013 found Xarelto causes an increased risk of bleeding among these patients:

  • Patients who are acutely ill and are taking blood thinners to reduce the risk of blood clotting. The research has found about a three-fold increase in the rate of serious bleeding among patients with acute medical illnesses.
  • Patients who suffer from acute coronary syndrome (ACS) face more than triple the risk of major bleeding when taking Xarelto.
  • Patients who undergo hip surgery almost double their risk of severe bleeding when taking Xarelto.

A major reason Xarelto is so dangerous is it has no counteracting drugs like other blood thinning drugs do. There is no way to reverse the effects of Xarelto. This is why it is so important to talk to your drug injury lawyer immediately if you’ve suffered from any of these effects.
